Both methods require learning the “slip and score” technique, which involves scratching the joining surfaces and applying watered-down clay to act as glue, ensuring the pieces stick together during firing. To create walls, the student pinches the clay smoothly between the fingers of both hands, moving upward in a slow, controlled rhythm. Speed control is vital here; tapping the foot pedal too hard or moving hands too quickly will distort the shape. The transformation of dull, grey clay into a vibrant, glassy ceramic piece happens during the firing and glazing processes. After a piece dries completely, it undergoes its first journey into the kiln, known as the bisque fire. This chemically alters the clay, making it durable yet porous enough to absorb glaze. Students then apply liquid glazes, which consist of powdered minerals suspended in water, using brushes, dipping techniques, or pouring methods.

Glazing requires a leap of faith because raw glaze rarely looks like the final product. A dull pink liquid might melt into a brilliant cobalt blue, while a murky green might turn into a metallic bronze after the final glaze fire. The high heat of the kiln fuses the glaze to the clay body, creating a waterproof, food-safe finish. For students, opening the kiln after a final fire feels like holiday morning, offering a beautiful lesson in patience, chemistry, and letting go of perfectionism.
